I need to find a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro engine!?

I live in St. Petersburg FL and our Camaro needs a new engine. I have looked but I can't really find any engines for sale. My dad says we might have to sell the car (for like $100) . I really don't want to sell the car, it's pretty awesome and everyone likes it. Its a 1986 Camaro IROC-Z. It has a V6 engine currently. I already tried google but I can't find anything.
Nevermind, it doesn't have a V6.

Go fast Camaro?

I have a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z-28, it has a Tuned Port Injection 305c.i. engine, 4 speed transmission, aftermarket B&M shifter, and is painted red. I want this thing to go fast, be seen a mile away, and heard from two miles away. What are some things I could do to it on a $5,000 budget. I want a PURE muscle car.

Before you waste any money on the 305 - which is likely tired anyway at this age - you should get a 350. I'm not sure, but the intake on the Tuned Port 350 - while it looks identical on the outside - I think is larger internally.

One guy suggests ditching the TPI and going to carburetor, but doing that - and many others - would of course relegate your vehicle to non-emissions compliant. This may or may not matter in your area, but even if it doesn't, it may greatly reduce (destroy, perhaps) the resale value of the vehicle.

I would locate a complete TPI 350 from a salvage yard, that way you know you're getting all the parts you need to do the swap completely. It may be possible to run this setup and pass emissions if all equipment is hooked up; nobody would likely even know it was a 350

Trouble is, on a $5000 budget you won't get very much done. Speed just isn't a very cheap hobby, no matter how many "speed on a budget" articles they put in the hot-rod magazines....those stories sell a lot more magazines than they do make people go fast.

You're not going to like this suggestion: I would sell the car as it is to someone who appreciates its performance now, and then just buy a faster car. If you did that, you could then buy a car with a 350 (or other larger engine) already installed, and you'd still have most of your money. It's just going to cost so much money to make a 305 Camaro fast, and that money could make you MUCH faster if you started with a faster car to begin with.

I love the 3rd-gen bodystyle; at a minimum I would try to find an '87-up Iroc with the 350 if you're heart is set on that bodystyle. I have owned a few 305 Camaros and Trans Ams from the 80s and while they were quick for the time, they really weren't very quick in the absolute sense of the word. Nowdays, many 4-cylinder rice-rockets that simply weren't made back then would blow them all away.

Pretty much, that's the way it is for all the 3rd-gen F-body cars. It's going to take a **LOT** of cash to make them fast.

In the interests of going fast (as possible) for the least amount of money (as possible), I would suggest the following: Sell your car. If it looks pretty good and you can get $2000-$3000 (more or less, value highly dependant on condition) and put that with your $5000, you'd certainly be able to find a later model F-body car.

If you've never driven the 1998-up Camaro, you'll be in for one hell of a surprise of how much faster they are than the previous cars. A 1998 Camaro (or Trans Am) is now almost 9 model-years old, and I'm sure you could find one with LS1 engine for roughly what you could sell your old car for, plus the $5000. You'd then have a car - completely stock - as fast (perhaps faster) than if you dumped THOUSANDS of dollars into your old once. Resale value and emissions compliance wouldn't be an issue, and there are TONS of compliant parts to make this already-fast car faster and emissions legal.

If you want a PURE muscle car as you state, consider this:

In the May 1998 issue of "High Tech Performance" magazine, the test car (98 Camaro Z28, bone stock) ran the quarter mile in 13.11 @ 107.4mph. That's on the ass-kicking side of musclecar performance. With M/T slicks, got down to 13.07.

In the August 1998 issue of "Chevy High Performance" in an article entitled "Is the Camaro Doomed?" They listed the fastest Camaro performance times (ever) from Motor Trend, their sister magazine.

Consider that the 427-powered 1967 had slicks, headers, and a Dana 4:10 rear end. Look at the 1982 and 1988 times (3rd gen).
This should tell you where to start if you want some true muscle....
